Naskapi Vision & Values for Learning

Learning spirit is grounded in our identity, our roots and our knowledge as part of our life-long learning journey.

Naskapi First

  • Learning spirit is grounded in our identity, our roots and our knowledge as part of our life-long learning journey.

  • Learning journey as a holistic process rooted in:
    • Community and the natural environment,
    • Deep cultural and spiritual connections to our land and water
    • Mother Earth, is what grounds us; it is what makes us whole and unique.

  • Our lands allow for us to speak, think and interact in our Naskapi language-our language provides a sense of belonging, a sense of continuity among a collective, and a deep connection to a knowledge system that grounds the individual to a place, a history, and an ancestral heritage to the people who continue to use and grow in and through that language.

  • Knowledge is transmitted through Naskapi language by the Elders and Knowledge Keepers — necessary for success in life–done as a collective and as a shared responsibility of everyone.

Academics at JSMS

At JSMS, we follow the guidelines set by the Québec Education Program (QEP) while incorporating Naskapi culture and values.

The QEP acts as a unified reference point for all those involved in the education system and society as a whole. It functions as a practical guide for teachers and an important framework for school leaders, staff, governing board members, and parents. Its main focus is on fostering the development of competencies, which involves students acquiring and utilizing a range of resources, including a body of widely accepted and shared knowledge.

Secondary Education

At JSMS, we offer several alternative programs tailored to the needs and size of our student population. For instance, we offer the Competency-Based Approach to Social Participation (CASP) for challenged students as well as Bridges which is subject based. Additionally, we occasionally offer the WOTP, the work-oriented training path.

Compentency 15

Value And Promote Indigenous Knowledge, Worldviews, Cultures And History

Competency 15 is an exhortation to the province of Quebec to uphold its responsibilities by implementing the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, and the Viens Commission, not only within education but across all areas addressed by their calls to action.
