Upholding Respect, Safety, and Integrity: Policies for a Positive Learning Environment at JSMS

The Jimmy Sandy Memorial School team aims to create a safe and respectful environment for all of our students, from preschool to high school. On this page you will find listed all our policies, from the Evaluation of Learning to Student Expulsion guidelines and all policies concerning the use of Drugs, Alcohol and Nicotine within school grounds.

We are committed to upholding academic integrity, fostering respectful behavior, and ensuring the safety and security of every member of the JSMS community.

Evaluation of Learning

The Central Quebec School Board is guided by values of openness, leadership, and cooperation within a nurturing educational environment. This is the driving force behind their commitment to “Learning for all”.

The MELS Policy on Evaluation of Learning promotes fairness by allowing exam retakes and appeals, ensuring all students can demonstrate their learning equally. Evaluations are unbiased, considering individual and group differences. This approach focuses on developing skills and knowledge across different learning situations.

Anti-Bullying and Anti-Violence Plan

Our Anti-Bullying Policy aligns with the Québec Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms, emphasizing the right to dignity, equal recognition of human rights without discrimination, and protection from harassment.

We are dedicated to maintaining a harassment-free environment for all of our community, including administrative staff and teachers, to students from preschool to high school. By working closely with every member of the Jimmy Sandy Memorial School community, we proactively create a respectful learning environment through education, prompt response to complaints, and regular policy evaluations. Our commitment ensures equity, confidentiality, and the upholding of individual rights under the legal framework of Quebec and Canada.

What to do if you are a victim of bullying/harassment

  • Remember, it’s not your fault; the harasser is responsible for his own actions.
  • Talk to someone you trust and consider contacting the school principal for support or to file a complaint. He or she is responsible for ensuring a learning environment free of any forms of harassment.

Important

You can, at all times, contact the Youth Protection Department or police depending on the severity of the situation.

Drugs, Alcohol Smoking/Vaping

The Jimmy Sandy Memorial School believes that smoking, drugs and alcohol disrupt learning and are harmful to our educational goals.

We are committed to maintaining a school environment free from smoking, vaping, drugs and alcohol. We believe strongly that working together with parents and the community is key.

JSMS strongly prohibits any use or sale of drugs and alcohol by students under its authority.

Use of Technologies

JSMS embraces innovative and responsible use of digital technology to enhance learning and work environments for all users. This policy commits to ongoing review and adaptation to keep pace with evolving digital technologies.

All employees, parents, students, and other users with access to JSMS electronic systems or devices, including personal devices on school property or network, agree to adhere to the rules outlined in this policy.

Policy for the Organization of Educational Services for At-Risk Students and Students with handicaps, Social Maladjustments or Learning Disabilities

At JSMS, our mission is to create a vibrant learning community where every student can excel academically, grow socially, and prepare for a successful future in our diverse society.

We believe in providing high-quality education to all students, emphasizing inclusivity and lifelong learning. Following the Special Education Policy, guided by Section 235 of the Education Act, we aim to ensure that students with disabilities and learning differences receive personalized support and are integrated into regular classrooms and school activities whenever possible.

This policy outlines procedures for evaluating students’ needs, creating Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), and ensuring a continuum of support that meets diverse learning styles and needs across our schools.
