Jimmy Sandy Memorial School is proud to derive many benefits from its particularly small student population and class size including an enriched total experience for all students. We provide an environment where students and staff have the opportunity to build meaningful relationships and where the emphasis is on individual growth and development so that students are culturally proud and confident. By working together, our students will be successful in their goals and dreams: ᐅᔅᑯᐎᑕᐤ (Uskuitau): Is a Naskapi word meaning “Let’s work harder together”
Respect, safety, and success are foundational values at JSMS and JCMLC because we believe they create a supportive environment where students can thrive.
By promoting respect, we foster positive relationships and a sense of belonging.
Ensures a secure learning atmosphere where students can focus on their studies and personal growth.
Is paramount, as it empowers students to achieve their full potential and prepares them for future endeavors.
Jimmy Sandy Memorial School (JSMS) serves the Naskapi Nation of Kawawachikamach and offers a unique educational experience. From Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 2, students are immersed in Naskapi, after which English becomes the primary language of instruction, and Naskapi is taught as a subject. While Naskapi is the first language for most students in Kawawachikamach, those from Schefferville often speak Innu and French before enrolling at JSMS, where they then learn both Naskapi and English. To support language acquisition, students take part in a Grade 3 enrichment year. In addition to offering classes up to Secondary V, JSMS provides students with the Work-Oriented Training Path: Pre-Work Training.
JSMS is unique in that it is a special status school, established through the Northeastern Québec Agreement (NEQA) signed between the Naskapi Nation and the Province of Québec. The Naskapi Education Committee (NEC) was established through the NEQA. For nearly 40 years, its members have been tasked with making important decisions on how to effectively allocate the budget provided to support the education of Naskapi beneficiaries. The Central Québec School Board (CQSB) oversees the administration of the school. The CQSB takes great pride in collaborating and honoring its relationship with the Naskapi First Peoples.
The James Chescappio Learning Centre (JCLC) is housed near Jimmy Sandy Memorial School in Kawawachikamach. After being closed for over a year, it reopened at the end of summer 2020 with two new teachers. The centre offers adult education courses, and teachers are available to assist students who wish to complete their Adult General Education. Our academic training counsellors provide support to students, including assistance with developing education or career plans, and help to determine the education or career path that best suits each student.
The Central Quebec School Board embraces the belief that learning is a lifelong journey and is therefore guided by principles of openness, leadership, and cooperation within its educational framework. With a steadfast commitment to prioritizing student growth and well-being, the Board ensures that learners remain at the forefront of its educational initiative at all times.
This approach aligns closely with the JSMS community’s belief that creating an inclusive environment is essential for nurturing a thriving student body. It ensures that every individual can realize their full potential within a safe and supportive setting.
Jimmy Sandy was born on March 1, 1965, as the youngest of fourteen children to the late Reverend Joseph Sandy and Elizabeth Sandy. He was a kind and delightful boy, well-liked by many, and had a special affection for people, particularly children. Raised in a Christian household, his parents instilled in him admirable values. Jimmy, soft-spoken by nature, lived his short life with joy. Sadly, on his 13th birthday, March 1, 1978, he tragically lost his life in a house fire along with his parents. The incident shocked the community. In 1985, when the Naskapi Nation of Kawawachikamach built their first school, they chose to name it in Jimmy’s honour.
At JSMS & JCLC, we are dedicated to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment where every individual feels valued, respected, and supported.
