Welcome to the Jimmy Sandy Memorial School (JSMS), a cornerstone of the Kawawachikamach community. Named in memory of Jimmy Sandy, a beloved young soul who tragically lost his life on his 13th birthday in 1978, JSMS stands as a testament to resilience and dedication to education. Founded in 1985 by the Naskapi Nation Of Kawawachikamach, our school fosters a nurturing environment where small class sizes promote enriched learning experiences and strong, supportive relationships between students and staff.

Jimmy Sandy was born on March 1, 1965, the youngest of fourteen children born to late Reverend Joseph Sandy and Elizabeth Sandy. Jimmy was a wonderful and pleasant boy whom many befriended. He had a lot of love for people, especially other children. His parents, who raised their children in the Christian faith, instilled fine qualities in Jimmy. He was a quiet-spoken boy who enjoyed his short life to the fullest.
Tragically, on March 1, 1978 (Jimmy’s 13th birthday), he perished in a house fire along with his mother and father. The community was deeply saddened. In 1985, the Naskapi Nation Of Kawawachikamach honored Jimmy’s memory by naming their first school after him.
The James Chescappio Memorial Learning Centre (JCMLC) is housed near Jimmy Sandy Memorial School in Kawawachikamach. After being closed for over a year, it reopened at the end of summer 2020 with two new teachers. It offers Adult Education courses and dedicated teachers who assist students in achieving their General Education Diploma. Our academic training counselors provide comprehensive support, aiding students in developing an education plan or career plan, and help determine the path that might be best suited for them.
The Central Quebec School Board embraces the belief that learning is a lifelong journey and is therefore guided by principles of openness, leadership, and cooperation within its educational framework.
