The Communities

There are 3 communities located in the region.

Kawawachikamach,Matimekush/Lac-John & Schefferville.

A little about the 3 Communities;
The community you will work in is called Kawawachikamach. The school is located near the center of the community. The community you live in is called Schefferville. Schefferville is a town which is located approximately fifteen kilometers away from Kawawachikamach. There is also a third community which is connected to Schefferville, called Matimekush/Lac John.
Both Kawawachikamach and Matimekush/Lac-John are Indigenous communities.

Kawawchikamach is mostly Naskapi people, Matimekush is mostly Innu people and Schefferville is where most of the non-Indigenous population stays. Schefferville was built when the mining of Iron Ore was big. Now mining still happens but is not as present as in the past.

Spring/Fall Activities

In the spring and fall, there are various activities you might enjoy, such as fishing for fun, participating in fishing derbies, camping, joining softball tournaments, playing ball hockey, hiking, berry picking, and more. Kawawachikamach has a pool that offers swimming for children and adults, and it can also be rented out for private events.

There are often activities at the Naskapi Community Center, such as Naskapi language classes and sewing classes. These activities frequently change, so if you’re interested in something specific, don’t hesitate to ask around. Many community members will be happy to have you join in on any activity.

Winter activities

In the winter, there are many similar activities to enjoy. Ski-dooing is very popular, with many people using ski-doos as their primary mode of transportation. Other activities include ice fishing, snowshoeing, sliding, and goose hunting during the goose break.

The arena often hosts tournaments where you can either participate or watch. The pool usually remains open year-round. The Naskapi community has a center called the NCC, which offers teen nights, activities for children, and occasionally events for adults.

Best way to know what’s going on is to ask! People are very friendly and knowledgeable!
